June 8, 2025 - Day of Pentecost

Rev. Robert Galloway

Prelude:

Welcome & Announcements - Rev. Robert Galloway

Call to Worship - Robert Galloway

The Spirit of God moves in the world and among the people,

not confined, not controlled, but a comfort to all.

On Pentecost, heaven meets earth

and a fearful people became a bold church.

We are alive in the Spirit

and proclaim the wondrous works of God.

Come, let us worship God.

*Processional Hymn #300: “We Are One in the Spirit” THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS

Call to Confession - Robin Lyle

Prayer of Confession (unison) - Robin Lyle

Holy God, we confess that we are slow to recognize your Spirit at work in the world. You speak, and we do not always listen. You give gifts, and we question their value. You unite us, and still we cling to division. Forgive us for the ways we stifle your Spirit, resist your grace, and forget the promise of life everlasting. By your mercy, breathe new life into us once again.

Assurance of Pardon - Robin Lyle

…Friends, believe the good news: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Passing the Peace - Robin Lyle

…The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

*Response #481: “I Believe in God the Father” (stanza 1 only) GENEVAN 42

Time for Young Disciples - Robert Galloway

Prayer for Illumination - Susan Luehrs

First Scripture Reading: Numbers 11:24-30 - Susan Luehrs

Sermon Scripture: Acts 2:1-13 - Robert Galloway

…The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Sermon: “Our Creed: Who or What? Spirit or Ghost?” - Robert Galloway

*Hymn #66: “Every Time I Feel the Spirit”  PENTECOST

*Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed (unison) - Susan Luehrs

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Presentation of our Gifts – Invitation - Susan Luehrs

Offertory Anthem: “If Ye Love Me,” Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) - Chancel Choir

Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH

Prayer of Dedication - Robert Galloway

Please join me in a unison Prayer of Dedication:

Generous God, you have poured out your Spirit and blessed us with gifts for ministry. On this Pentecost day, we remember how you formed your Church - one body with many voices, united in praise and purpose. Accept these offerings as signs of our gratitude and faith. Use them - and use us - for the building up of your Church, for the care of your people, and for the work of your kingdom, until all know the promise of life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer - Robert Galloway

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*Closing Hymn #291: “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness” SPIRIT
